Geography mattered heavily in WWI because, it made individual battles worse than they needed to be. Geographic features such as deserts, wetlands, rivers, chalky ground all played a part in effecting the outcome of WWI. This can be shown in many battles throughout the war, including the Battle of Romani where “geography made this battle a hell; as it was in the middle of summer, many soldiers died of dehydration, and sand dunes made it hard to transport soldiers and machinery.” (http://fernandomotelujan.wix.com/battleofromani#!casualtieswounded/cwuu). As trenches were one of the most used strategies in WWI, the geography effected this when they were built in wetlands, near rivers or in wet climate zones. These trenches then became soaked and cause trench foot. Trench foot increased dramatically the casualties of WWI. This can be supported by looking at the battle of the Marne where, “ Soldiers throughout this battle may have been very uncomfortable..the event was near a river. The dampness combined with the ever so often changing weather gave the soldiers Trench foot.” (http://anicholasdenton98.wix.com/battleofthemarne). Bridges and rivers also played an essential role as bridges were the main source of transporting armies and machinery from one place to another. Those who controlled the bridges, controlled movement. “The Americans also came up with the idea to have temporary bridges, so they could build across the river to move to the other side faster.” (http://anicholasdenton98.wix.com/battleofthemarne. WW1 is remembered for being one of world worst wars this being for the amount of deaths and other stuff such as the soldiers condition. One thing that could be giving as the reason as for why this battles were so bad would be geography as it brought diseases and other difficulties to the battle.

As decried by anyone who went to WW1 or a person who leaved through WW1, WW1 was the war to change all war or the war to end all wars. As it changed the soldiers mentality of a war, from it being a glorious and honorable place to be and act upon to it being a horrible, disgusting or in other words a hell for anyone who would be involved in it. It affected the soldiers both fiscally and mentally, to the edge of collapse. We can see an example of how the war affected soldiers in the battle of Tannenburg, as “The Russian Commander committed suicide following his army’s defeat at this battle”. http://battleoftannenberg.wix.com/battle-of-tannenberg. We can see here how bad would the war affect them mentally. The circumstance in which this soldiers leaved in were what apart from the fighting and deaths what lead them to collapse. In the Battle of Gaza we can see the horrible conditions on which the soldiers fought. “ British and Egyptian forces in this battle were on strict deadline: soldiers had water and food supplies for 24 hours only. In the end, British command called off the attack.”http://firstbattleofgaza.weebly.com/. The war changed the world mentality toward wars.

As the countries that fought WW1 had colonies all around the glob this made the war to be fought all around the world and in more countries. Soem countries were trying to take control over areas that could help them economically or affect there opposition. In the battle of Rafa you can see how the colonies were used to fight for this. Although a small battle in duration and number of casualties, this battle was very important for its role in securing the sinai peninsula for britian.”

In WW1 happened in a time of industrialism this being that countries were starting be more and more open toward new ideas and this new ideas creating revolutionary ideas artifacts. The countries the industrialized the most had the better economy: and as war started the countries that had industrials the most well they had a better armies. They had the better armies in the sense that they had the most advanced technology and the newest ideas in the terms of war strategy. An example of this may be the battle of Stalluponen, “the Russian army failed in its strategy, “Plan 19”, unable to flank the Germans because Russians soldiers were fighting with swords and their hands against German Artillery & guns.”
